Wow. Loved the composition. First I thought its oil or acrylics. Gr8 job with digital I always struggle with the textured effect for digital art.

Awesome Steve! Thank you so much . I am familiar with Photoshop and Coral Painter I have them both. Never used Sketchbook Pro or Art Rage 4 though. What are their functions? LOL I am still drawing with a mouse :/

Steve Goad replied:

Anytime! You should have what you need to get started in digital art with Photoshop and Painter. I like using ArtRage because it's the closest any program has got to the feel of real mediums. Drawing with a mouse? Wow, it's night and day when drawing with a Wacom Pen...and a lot more natural than drawing with mouse, trust me! If it isn't in your budget yet for a professional series Wacom you can always pick up a Bamboo creative for a lot less. It doesn't have the sensitivity as the Intuos line but it's still 100 times better than a mouse. Sketchbook Pro is perfect for well...sketching :) but you can knock out some very detailed technical drawings a lot of the pros use it for car design but honestly the brushes in the latest version have a nice painterly feel to them. ArtRage 4 is pretty powerful and to be honest I'd recommend this program for anyone wanting to get into digital art, the learning curve is small, the interface is perfect and most traditional artists will feel at home with this program than the others. If you go to their website you can try the demo for free, I'd recommend getting a pen first though. :)

Steve, I am leaning toward digital art now, after a 24 yr. photography career. I had a couple questions for you, if you don't mind my asking. I used to do a lot of free hand art but have since then dabbled in creating artwork starting with a photo. I absolutely love your work and am wondering if you are free handing these or building them from a photo. Either way, they are magnificent. Also, was wondering what software you are using. Thank you so much for your time. Irma

Steve Goad replied:

Hi Irma, I don't mind at all and thank you for the kindness. All my digital work is free handed with a Wacom Tablet Intuos 5 using the following software: ArtRage 4, Paint Tool Sai, Photoshop CS4, CorelPainter X3, and Sketchbook Pro 6. I tend to switch between all of them since there truly isn't a one stop solution. They all compliment each other really nice. There are times when I'll overlay my paintings with textures to add effect but this particular piece is completely made up. I just used a nice variety of brushes in ArtRage 4 and Photoshop. If you're using Photoshop I'd be happy to share the brushes I'm using, you can simply import them into your own work space and test them. You can also import the same brushes into ArtRage 4. It's what I used to get all the nice little random paint dabs for the trees and shrubs. The times I use textures are like in my "Stargazer Lily" piece. I painted the the petals and background with a pastel brush by hand, then used real watercolor paint strokes to overlay on the petals. It's why some of my work is categorized as mixed media because digital and real paint techniques were applied. Hope this helps.

About Steve Goad

Art is what I do, and what I love. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. I believe we all start out as artists, and I have no doubt that at some point, each of us has picked up a pencil or marker to connect with our creative side. I just decided to stick with it and have stayed committed to developing my style which consists of a wide range of realism, abstract and a little bit of both. In short, I paint what I like and choose colors that move me. My subject matter is also wide ranging, consisting of concept, whimsical, wildlife, fantasy and science fiction. I work with acrylic, oils, digital and follow a simple rule: I make my traditional paintings look like digital photos and my digital work like traditional paintings. I...
